To się w głowie nie mieści, zwłaszcza wszystkim, którzy pamiętają doskonały hiszpański horror [Rec] oraz to, jak Amerykanie zdołali – mimo prób odtworzenia filmu ujęcie po ujęciu – kompletnie skaszanić finalny produkt. Na szczęście The Ring powstał w tym krótkim okienku, w którym Gore Verbinski był naprawdę zdumiewająco dobrym i oryginalnym reżyserem (dość powiedzieć, że rok później stworzył Piratów z Karaibów). I nawet Ehren Kruger, scenarzysta, którego po prostu nie trawię, a który odpowiadał za jedne z najgorszych hollywoodzkich szmir, stanął tym razem na wysokości zadania, sprawnie “tłumacząc” japońską grozę. Ale dość już tego przydługawego wstępu, porozmawiajmy o fabule. Zaczyna się trochę sztampowo, sugerując typowy amerykański slasher. Przenosimy się bowiem do domu na przedmieściach Seattle, w którym dwie nastolatki – Katie i Becca – rozmawiają o tajemniczej, “przeklętej kasecie wideo”. (Młodszym czytelnikom tłumaczę – kaseta wideo to było coś podobnego do płyty DVD, ale w formie taśmy magnetycznej zamkniętej w plastikowym pudełku. Jeszcze młodszym czytelnikom tłumaczę – płyta DVD to był nośnik, na którym ludzie nagrywali filmy, zanim odkryli internet). Wracając do The Ring – okazuje się, że wedle miejskiej legendy, każdy nieszczęśnik, który obejrzy nagranie, dostanie telefon odliczający dni do jego śmierci. A po siedmiu dniach umrze. Tak się składa, że Katie oglądała film ze znajomymi tydzień wcześniej. I umiera. Jej koleżanka doznaje wstrząsu psychicznego. To wstęp, dalej jest lepiej. Na pogrzebie matka zmarłej dziewczynki prosi swoją siostrę – samotnie wychowującą syna reporterkę Rachel – aby zbadała okoliczności śmierci Katie. Kobieta trafia w końcu do chatki, w której Katie spędziła weekend ze znajomymi. Tam znajduje taśmę, odpala ją i… Najpierw obejrzyjmy to nagranie, bo jest naprawdę całkiem nieźle zrealizowane. Ale w 2002 to było coś autentycznie nowego i bardzo przejmującego. A nawet dziś, gdy ogląda się ten obraz samemu, po ciemku… potrafi trochę zaniepokoić. Ale wróćmy do Rachel – po obejrzeniu nagrania słyszy dzwonek telefonu. Odbiera, tylko po to, by usłyszeć szept mówiący: “Siedem dni”. Na tym etapie dziennikarka pozostaje dość sceptyczna, ale kiedy sama zacznie doświadczać paranormalnej dziewczynki z długimi włosami i gdy w końcu przypadkiem film obejrzy synek Rachel, rozpocznie się walka z czasem i walka o życie. Jedyną szansą na przeżycie może być zgłębienie tajemnicy kasety wideo. I co by o The Ring nie mówić – pomysł na fabułę jest tu doprawdy doskonały. Widz jest jednocześnie przerażony i zaintrygowany, zdaje sobie sprawę z zagrożenia, a zarazem ani przez chwilę nie pojawia się w jego głowie przeświadczenie o sztuczności motywacji postaci. W wielu horrorach chcemy krzyczeć, aby nasi bohaterowie uciekali, zamiast złazić do tych cholernych piwnic czy mrocznych jaskiń. Tymczasem w The Ring stawka jest ustawiona w ten sposób, że aby ocalić siebie i swoje dziecko, Rachel po prostu musi zstąpić do paszczy potwora. Kobieto, przestań oglądać! Ale oczywiście to nie tyle zasługa Amerykanów, co Hideo Nakaty i Hiroshiego Takahashi, czyli twórców oryginalnego, japońskiego horroru. Natomiast trzeba też oddać sprawiedliwość Gore’owi Verbinskiemu. Dokonał on doskonałej translacji The Ring dla zachodniego widza, bardziej przystępnej, ale jednocześnie nietracącej głębi ani atmosfery oryginału. Ogromna w tym zasługa Naomi Watts, która jako Rachel naprawdę dźwiga ten film aktorsko, wiarygodnie sprzedając nam jednocześnie przerażoną, ale i zdeterminowaną matkę. Co rzadkie – radę dał też dziecięcy aktor, czyli David Dorfman wcielający się w małego Aidana. A Daveigh Chase jako Samara, upiorna dziewczynka z długimi włosami… ja wiem, że tu niewiele było do zagrania, ale wyszła z tego rola ikoniczna. Równie wiele dobrego można powiedzieć o zdjęciach i pracy kamery. Oj, chyba znów narażę się purystom, ale powiem, że stoją na co najmniej równym poziomie jak w dziele Hideo Nakaty. A to wszystko prowadzi do prostej konkluzji. The Ring zdecydowanie jest filmem wartym polecenia, i nie trzeba się snobować na oglądanie wyłącznie wersji japońskiej, bo tym razem Amerykanie nie pokpili sprawy. Pokpili ją dopiero przy słabych sequelach (The Ring 2 i Rings). Co jest tym dziwniejsze, że akurat pierwszy z sequeli został wyreżyserowany… przez Hideo Nakatę. No, ale to jest temat na osobny tekst.
